Hood asked: Would it be possible to create a "white list" of programs that are undoubtedly original works?

Perhaps, though a lot depends on what "original" means. (And I wonder what the value of such a list would be.)

Sometimes important is not only that which programms will belong there but which programms will be not present there.

Such a list would probably be quite short (For example Rybka and Stockfish would not appear on the list). But then again that depends on what is in the definition of "original".

Stockfish _would_ make the list, since it represents a "name change" with the original author still active. Otherwise one could make that argument about Crafty since my previous program was called "Cray Blitz" and pieces of that old code are definitely in Crafty, albeit in a different language and representation.

Correct me of I am wrong, but weren't Tord added to the team at a later point and weren't Stockfish originally started as a Glaurung branch?

And just to state where I stand in case the Stockfish crew feels this post is somehow unfair. I think that the quest for "original" is somewhat strange and Stockfish is a good example of OS when it works really well, adding a lot of own ideas to the community while using other sources too in able to create a really strong program.

Thanks for proposals.
We have some engines. Not many from the top of the rating lists. :-)

From the top engines I would add Hiarcs, Shredder, Junior and of course Fruit.

Does anyone ever wonder what the Computer Chess World would look like now if open source Fruit had not been released!?
