one could try to replay the games with crafty versions of that time, to see how much similarity there is.
which crafty version was used in those years ?

Only original programs are allowed and ABSOLUTELY NO CLONES. Most programs are pretty well know by the Computer Chess community and therefore if brand new, unknown program appears I will consult other people to decide its entry in the tournament. ICC reserves the right to decline any application for this tourney.

Hi Volker,

Rybka is my program. I would be happy to answer any questions. At the moment I am very busy with some last-minute changes, I hope that tonight I will make it to ICC finally for some testing/demonstration games. (Have null modem cable, and instructions from Thomas Mayer for auto232.) The account there as you know is "Rybka".

Also, small info update: for the CCT I'll be using a P4 3 GHz with 1 G RAM. Rybka searches with a variation of MTD (f) with 24 byte hash entries, and hashes all nodes, and at the moment doesn't rehash, so the hash table for this time control should probably be somewhere around 512 MB?! This needs to be checked - I'll send another update later.
Note that Rybka actually finished 48th-50th (many tables sort the results by performance rating, rather than points). Not that it matters, but does anyone know what hardware Crafty used? [Probably in CCC archives somewhere, but Bob might "just know"].

To the best of my knowledge, the exact version of Rybka used in this tournament might very well no longer exist. The evaluation was probably close to the following:

I do something slightly similar. I score each piece according to how close it is to the enemy king, and to its own king. These scores are fed into a function which also takes into account the material on the board, holes in the pawn structure, and the difference in "attacking force". (For example if there are two pieces vs rook and pawn, the two pieces are a greater attacking force.)
