I suppose another approach might be to start with way too many forums, and then weed them out depending on how many posts they get. ;)

The more forums you have, the less people will see!

A little organization should be fine. I dont see any need for "Chess Engine Cloning" sub-forum. "Human Tournaments & Matches" and "Correspondence Games" Should be merged to one forum. Platforms should not have any sub-forums because too much organisation at times can create problems you are trying to prevent.
